Indications for bariatric surgery

Selection criteria for  bariatric surgery in most areas include:

 

  • BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2, or more than 45.35 kg (100 pounds) overweight.

  • BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 and at least one or more obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), arterial hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, disorders gastrointestinal or heart disease.

  • Inability to achieve sustained healthy weight loss over a period of time with previous weight loss efforts.

  • Absence of a secondary cause of obesity.

  • Willingness to cooperate with long-term follow-up.

  • Acceptable operative risk.

  • Not recommended yet for those under 18 or over 60 years old.
