Gastric bypass

Bypass gástrico. Tratamientos, cirugías y nutrición. Dr. César Martínez. Obesity Science. CDMX. México.

Information about the procedure

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), often called gastric bypass, is considered the "gold standard" of bariatric surgery.

This surgery limits the amount of food you can eat, and it also affects how food is digested and nutrients are absorbed.

The procedure involves creating a gastric reservoir from a small portion of the stomach and attaching it directly to the small intestine, thus preventing the passage of food through a large part of the stomach and duodenum. Thus, not only is a gastric reservoir too small to hold large amounts of food, but the absorption of nutrients is substantially reduced by avoiding passage through the small intestine.

Advantage

  • Produces significant long-term weight loss (60-80% loss of excess weight).

  • Restrict the amount of food that can be consumed.

  • It can lead to conditions that increase energy expenditure.

  • It produces favorable changes in intestinal hormones that reduce appetite and increase satiety.

  • Typical maintenance of more than 50% loss of excess weight.
